I have also come across conditions where the burners were smothered in rust. I am especially concerned with this and other conditions found when I come across the older Lennox Pulse furnace. Many times I have come across furnaces where the heat exchange compartment showed signs of rust and corrosion. When inspecting any furnace I want to make sure that the burners are clean, and the flame burns a constant blue.

The potential threat of the defective furnaces is the result of increased corrosion in the heat exchanger. The Lennox Pulse 21 was manufactured from 1990 on and is not listed as containing a defective heat exchanger. These furnaces can be identified by opening the unit and finding either model number starting with вЂњG14вЂќ or вЂњGSR14вЂќ followed by the remaining model number. The Lennox Pulse furnace that we are concerned with was manufactured and installed between 19 and poses a potential carbon monoxide threat to a home. Not all of these furnaces are defective, but there is enough information to warrant further evaluation if the unit is present. When inspecting an older home I am on the alert for possible defective or hazardous products, which include the older Lennox Pulse furnace. It is every inspectorвЂ™s responsibility to be diligent in the pursuit of all information that affects the function, safety and habitability of a home.

Part of being a home inspector is keeping up to date and informed of products and/or appliance defects, recalls, and hazards. Being informed of and recognizing these and other hazardous appliances are paramount when inspecting a home. There are some carbon monoxide safety hazards in some of the Lennox hot air heating furnaces installed before 1990.
